Meet The Team - Kim Hannon

NEWS | February 22nd 2021

Ever wondered what our wondermakers get up to in the wonderlab? Here's a quick catch up with one of the team to give you an insight into their world.

Article by Kevin Triggle

Can you give us a bit of a bio; a quick summary of where you have worked, and what your role is at Digital Wonderlab?

I'm Service Delivery Manager here, responsible for making sure our projects deliver to our clients need, managing the whole portfolio of work at DWL. Before I joined the team, I spent 15 years in Project, Programme and Change consultancy across a wide range of industries. I've found my happy place in working with the impactful organisations who we support at the Wonderlab!

Why, when and how did you get interested in Project and Programme management?

I've always been a planner and I love bringing order to chaos to get things done so Project Management as a career was an obvious fit. I spent my early career earning my stripes by wearing most of the project hats on some really chunky projects. Taking on bigger and more complex projects has allowed me to find my niche - effective project and programme set up through 'just enough governance' with a real focus on effective change and readiness, making sure that the change sticks and delivers the impact required.

Tell us about your approach, how do you juggle all the projects coming into the Wonderlab?

I love the problem solving elements that Program Management brings and managing a diverse portfolio of project deliveries across a number of clients here at the lab definitely gives me problems to get my teeth into. Most of my time is spent talking to people - internally and externally - clarifying and agreeing priorities, 'herding all the cats' to focus on delivering the critical, value-add solutions and making sure potential barriers are removed.

What are the types of tools you use day to day?

We are just in the process of transitioning our delivery management across to the Atlassian suite of products Jira software for development, Jira Service Desk for support, Trello for day to day action management and collaboration with clients and my favourite tool Miro for workshopping, mapping and visualisation.

What are your top tips for anyone thinking about a career move into Project Management?

Take every opportunity to get involved in projects in your organisation - as a change agent, a UAT tester or an SME to get a firm appreciation for project roles and then look at opportunities to step in to workstream or area leads or junior PM roles like PMO or PMA to work out if fast paced project life is for you.Whilst there is some great training out there in the project space, Agile, Prince etc you cant underestimate the value of hands on experience and putting theory in to practice.

What’s your favourite bit of tech that you cannot live without?

My kindle... I love reading and having a library in my handbag for when I get a quiet moment to escape it's great!

What is your most recent client project that you are proud of; for how they put the user front and centre?

Great Western Credit Union - a great product for a great client with a great purpose - and delivered through the challenges of lockdown!
